Timber is the material windows were made from for most of architectural history, and it still has qualities uPVC cannot replicate. The comparison is not as one-sided as either industry tends to present it.
What settles it in most Indian projects is not the initial choice but what the following twenty years demand.
Where timber genuinely wins
Worth stating first, because it is real.
Appearance. Real timber has grain depth, tonal variation and a tactile quality that a laminate approximates rather than reproduces. At close range, in good light, the difference is visible to anyone paying attention.
Repairability. Damaged timber can be filled, sanded and refinished. A damaged uPVC profile generally cannot — the section is replaced.
Heritage and conservation contexts. Where a building's character or a planning requirement calls for timber, no substitute is appropriate.
Slimmer sections. Timber's strength allows narrower frames than uPVC needs for equivalent spans.
Where uPVC wins
Dimensional stability
The decisive difference in the Indian climate. Timber absorbs moisture, swells through the monsoon and shrinks back in the dry season. That annual cycle works on the seals and eventually on the joints.
A timber window that closes perfectly in March may bind in August. uPVC does not absorb water, so its dimensions do not change with the season and its gaskets stay under the compression they were designed for.
Maintenance
Timber needs repainting or resealing every three to four years in Indian conditions, and periodic pest treatment. Each cycle costs materials, labour and disruption.
uPVC needs washing. That is the whole of it.
Pest resistance
Termites are a genuine risk for timber joinery in much of India. uPVC offers nothing to feed on.
Thermal performance
Timber is a reasonable insulator — better than aluminium. But a multi-chamber uPVC profile, with sealed air pockets interrupting the heat path, generally outperforms a solid timber section of comparable depth.
Sealing
uPVC profiles are designed around gasket systems, and corners are fusion welded rather than mechanically jointed. Timber joints are mechanical, and they move.
The cost picture over time
Purchase price is where most comparisons stop, and it is the least useful number.
Hardwood windows from established suppliers start at a level comparable to mid-range uPVC. Over twenty-five years, though, timber accumulates repainting cycles roughly every three to four years, periodic pest treatment, occasional joint repair, and seal replacement as movement opens gaps.
uPVC over the same period accumulates occasional gasket replacement and hardware servicing.
The gap is not marginal. Maintenance across a timber window's life can approach or exceed its original cost — which is why the honest comparison is whole-life rather than at purchase.
Environmental comparison
More balanced than either side usually admits.
Timber from responsibly managed sources has a strong embodied profile — it sequesters carbon and requires modest processing energy. uPVC extrusion is energy-intensive. On manufacture alone, timber wins clearly.
Operationally the picture inverts. A uPVC frame with better sealing and lower conductivity reduces cooling energy every day the building stands, and in a cooling-dominated climate that accumulates substantially.
Service life then compounds it. A frame lasting decades without replacement avoids the impact of every replacement cycle it displaces, along with the paint, solvents and transport that timber maintenance consumes.
Neither material is straightforwardly greener. In Indian conditions, over a building's life, the operational and longevity advantages generally favour uPVC.
Choosing between them
Timber makes sense when
- The building's character requires it, or conservation rules demand it
- Authentic grain matters at close range and a laminate will not satisfy
- There is genuine willingness to maintain it on schedule
- Slim sections are needed that uPVC cannot achieve for the span
uPVC makes sense when
- The building is in a humid or monsoon-affected region — most of India
- Long-term maintenance is a real consideration rather than an intention
- Thermal or acoustic performance is a priority
- Termite risk is present
- The property may be let, or its upkeep may pass to someone else
The middle option
Where timber appearance is wanted without timber maintenance, laminated uPVC is the practical answer. A woodgrain film is bonded to the profile under heat and pressure before fabrication, so the finish is part of the profile and never needs recoating.
Quality varies. A convincing woodgrain has grain depth and tonal variation; a poor one reads as printed pattern at arm's length. View a full-size sample in daylight rather than a swatch under showroom lighting, and judge it honestly.
It is not timber, and anyone who tells you it is indistinguishable is overselling. What it does is deliver most of the visual intent with none of the upkeep — which for many projects is the right trade.
Frequently asked questions
Are uPVC windows better than wooden windows?
In most Indian conditions, for most residential projects, yes — mainly because uPVC does not absorb moisture, so it does not swell through the monsoon and shrink in the dry season the way timber does. Timber retains real advantages in appearance, repairability, slimmer sections and heritage contexts, and it needs repainting every three to four years plus periodic pest treatment.
Do uPVC windows cost less than wooden windows?
At purchase, hardwood windows from established suppliers start at a level comparable to mid-range uPVC. Across twenty-five years the picture changes substantially, because timber accumulates repainting cycles, pest treatment, joint repair and seal replacement, while uPVC accumulates occasional gasket and hardware servicing.
Can uPVC windows look like wood?
Laminated profiles carry a woodgrain film bonded to the extrusion under heat and pressure before fabrication, so the finish is part of the profile and never needs recoating. Quality varies considerably — a convincing woodgrain has grain depth and tonal variation, while a poor one reads as printed pattern at arm's length. View a full-size sample in daylight before committing.
